What are you looking for in residents

We accept 8 residents per year. We are looking for applicants with a strong academic background and a commitment to family medicine. Good interpersonal skills and a strong work ethic are equally important. Finally, we look for applicants who we feel will work well with our current residents and foster a healthy educational environment.

Where do you do your hospital rotations, outpatient clinical rotations and outpatient family medicine clinic?

Our hospital rotations are primarily held at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Florida. BMC is a 502 bed private, non-profit hospital.

The Pediatric rotation is held at All Children’s Hospital located adjacent to Bayfront Medical Center. The Family Medicine Outpatient Center is located conveniently across the street from Bayfront Hospital. The geographic proximity affords ease and efficiency when coming to and from the clinic and hospital. It also ensures our residents have their fellow residents and faculty nearby for both education and camaraderie. The Family Health Center is houses clinical offices for our residents and faculty, the OB-GYN clinics, and Sports Medicine Clinic. The facility is equipped with laboratory services, cardiac stress testing, minor surgical procedure rooms, colposcopy, and colonoscopy, for complete outpatient care. For more information see Program Information.

What is the night rotation?

We use a Night Rotation system for our evening call. Each intern will do three two-week blocks of night call throughout the year. The shifts begin at 7pm and end after morning report the following day.

Do you work with residents from other specialties during residency

We are unopposed residency program for all rotations except during our inpatient pediatrics and obstetrics months.  On these rotations we work alongside pediatric residents from University of South Florida at All Children’s Hospital and Bayfront OB-GYN residents at our own Bayfront Medical Center.  This system provides a high volume of learning cases and a structured academic environment.  For all other rotations, our residents are the only residents which allows our faculty members as well as other physicians in the hospital to prioritize our residents’ education.

What are the patient demographics like?

The St. Petersburg and surrounding Tampa Bay area provides a diverse patient population with a wide range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our residents see both insured and uninsured patients. Our residents also provide service to patients at no cost 1 evening per month at a local free clinic.

What procedures will I learn during the residency?

Our residents become very comfortable with both inpatient and outpatient procedures. On the inpatient medicine service, residents will perform incision and drainage of abscesses, central venous catheterizations, thoracentesis, and paracentesis. In the outpatient setting, our residents will perform skin biopsies, exercise stress tests, colposcopy, colonoscopy, intra-uterine device placement, and joint injections.

What do your graduates end up doing after graduation?

Because our residents come from all over the United States, we have graduates in every aspect of Family Medicine. Recent graduates have pursued Sports Medicine Fellowships, opened private practices, joined established group practices, served as hospitalists, pursued academics, urgent care or locum tenens. While many of our residents choose to stay in Florida and the Bay area we have many residents from coast to coast.

Are there moonlighting opporunities?

After completion of intern year, USMLE Step 3, and obtaining a Medical License, our residents have two main moonlighting opportunities. First, Bayfront has four Convenient Care facilities in the Tampa Bay area which provide walk-in care for the community. Second, our residents can moonlight at the Kindred Nursing Care Facility. This facility is a long-term nursing care facility for patient’s on ventilators. Our residents serve as the on-call, in-house physician. Moonlighting schedules are coordinated with each individual’s work and personal schedule.
