Family Medicine
Bayfront Medical Center offers an ACGME-accredited, three-year residency in Family Medicine. We accept eight new residents each year to begin training in our community based academic teaching facility. We strive to prepare our residents for all aspects of family medicine including outpatient medicine, sports medicine, women’s health, pediatrics, inpatient hospital care, and urgent care.
Curriculum
The first year rotations concentrate on inpatient medicine, surgery, OB/GYN, pediatrics, emergency medicine and the newborn nursery. After developing a strong foundation in these areas, the second and third year curriculum expand the outpatient experience with further rotations and electives in specialty fields. Unique rotations may be provided on the main campus of the University of South Florida (in Tampa) and abroad during the third year.
See our Family Medicine Curriculum here.
Internal Medicine
The inpatient Internal Medicine experience is rich with learning cases and hospital procedures. Each medicine team consists of two interns, two second year residents, and a third year resident. On this busy service, residents will admit and manage patients on the general medical floors, coronary care, and neurologic intensive care units, and also serve as the Code Blue team for the entire hospital. The patient population provides a plethora of interesting medical cases through which residents refine their clinical skills and critical thinking. Our outstanding teaching staff consists of our own family medicine faculty as well as community physicians trained in Internal Medicine, Radiology, Cardiology, Critical Care and Pulmonology, Nephrology and Infectious Disease. At morning rounds our faculty emphasize the importance of evidence based medicine while preserving the art of the patient history and physical exam.
Pediatrics
Pediatric rotations include both inpatient and outpatient experience with acute and chronic issues as well as normal growth and development. From newborns to the pre-college physical, our pediatric experience teaches age-appropriate management of pediatric medical, nutritional, behavioral and emotional issues. First year residents rotate at All Children’s Hospital, located adjacent to Bayfront Medical Center. Our residents work alongside pediatric residents from University of South Florida in a stimulating, academic environment. Because Bayfront provides tertiary care to high-risk pregnant women, Bayfront’s Newborn Nursery provides a high volume of cases of newborn assessment, resuscitation, and intensive care. In the outpatient setting, residents participate in the busy practice of our faculty pediatrician, Dr W. Michael Brown. Furthermore, each resident also participates in a longitudinal pediatric experience in his or her own clinical practice. Residents can use elective time to further develop in more specialized areas of pediatrics, or to increase their exposure to general pediatrics. During the three years, the significant experience in pediatrics truly prepares each resident to be proficient in the complete care of all pediatric patients and meets the rotation requirements for the “Areas of Concentration” in pediatrics.
Obstetrics and Gynecology
Because Bayfront is a Level III Perinatal Center, residents gain invaluable experience with high-risk obstetrical care. Our Family Medicine residents work alongside our very own OB-GYN residents in a a very structured, academic rotation. Under the supervision of senior residents and faculty, our residents learn how to provide prenatal care during both normal and high risk pregnancies. During the Gynecology rotation, residents gain experience in colposcopy, contraceptive guidance, and well-woman care. These skills learned on these rotations are honed over the course of the three years in each resident’s own longitudinal clinical practice.
Surgery and Emergency Medicine
Bayfront Medical Center is a busy Level 2 Trauma Center. Together with the Bayflite helicopter transport service, we serve far beyond the Tampa Bay area. In our bustling ER rotation, residents work one-on-one with our Emergency Medicine Faculty to treat everything from the minor emergencies to full trauma alerts. This hands on experience continues in the Surgery rotation as residents work directly with our Surgery attending faculty.
Behavioral Medicine
The psychiatry and behavioral medicine curriculum at Bayfront consists of three components: the conference series, behavioral medicine rotations, and clinical preceptorship. The conference series involves a family dynamics conference and a behavioral medicine/psychiatry conference each month. The behavioral medicine rotations provide an essential outpatient experience of behavioral and psychiatric problems most often encountered in family medicine. Clinical precepting consists of day-to-day teaching with patients.
Call Schedule
Interns and senior residents participate in a night rotation consisting of call Monday through Thursday. Weekend call coverage is provided by the residents on the Internal Medicine rotation.
Teaching Conferences
Teaching conferences include daily noontime lunch conferences. These conferences are the primary didactic portion of the program and are organized to cover all aspects of family medicine. Additional daily conferences are held for the inpatient medical service. Residents and attending staff participate in the weekly Grand Rounds which often features guest speakers. All staff conferences are approved for CME credit.
Residents can also attend monthly medicine and/or sports medicine journal club meetings that emphasize evidence-based medicine and critical thinking skills.
Annual Family Medicine Review Conference
This year, the Bayfront Family Medicine Residency celebrated the 30th Anniversary of hosting our Annual Family Medicine Review. This annual, largely attended CME Conference features nationally-renowned speakers and includes a very informative Evidence Based Medicine lecture series lead by our own residents. The Annual Family Medicine Review is traditionally held at Tradewinds Island Grand Resort located on St. Pete Beach every year during the sunny days of Spring.
The Family Health Center
The Family Medicine clinic is located in the Bayfront Family Health Center, directly adjacent to the main hospital. This three-story facility serves as the Family Medicine and OB/GYN ambulatory care facility as well as the Sports Medicine fellowship clinic. The facility is equipped to provide outpatient care needs including laboratory services, dermatologic procedures, cardiac stress testing, colonoscopy, and well-woman care including colposcopy. The Family Medicine clinic is a model of service and education. Our nursing staff, residents and faculty serve more than 1,000 patients each month. St. Petersburg and the surrounding Pinellas County area provide a diverse patient population with a wide range of ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. In addition, many of the Bayfront Medical Center employees choose our residents as their primary care providers for both themselves and their families. From their first year, our residents develop their own practices under the supervision and guidance of our faculty.
All Children’s Hospital (ACH)
ACH is a dedicated pediatric hospital located right next door to Bayfront Medical Center. It houses a 25 bed Pediatric Emergency Room and 216 pediatric inpatient beds as well as provides Level 3 Neonatology Intensive Care and Pediatric Intensive Care. While providing tertiary care to pediatric patients all over the state of Florida, ACH serves as a teaching institution for the University of South Florida Pediatric Residency as well as Bayfront’s Family Medicine Residency. On the Pediatrics rotation our residents work alongside Pediatric residents from USF. The variety of cases and outstanding teaching faculty creates an excellent educational experience. The proximity of ACH to Bayfront enriches the educational experience of our residents not only in the field of Pediatrics, but also in the field of Obstetrics. Many high-risk pregnancies deliver at Bayfront because of its proximity to the Level 3 NICU at ACH. While on the Newborn Nursery rotation at Bayfront, our residents work directly with the Neonatologists who cover both Bayfront and ACH. |
