Sports Medicine Coverage
Fellows will be given the opportunity to act independently as team physicians for various sports at the University of South Florida and Eckerd College, as well as local high schools. Opportunities also exist for fellows to shadow primary care team physicians for the National Hockey League (Tampa Bay Lightning) and Major League Baseball (Tampa Bay Rays). Our program also provides medical coverage for a number of sprint triathlons in the area organized by Florida Race Place Magazine Promotions.
University of South Florida Athletics
The University of South Florida Athletic Program (NCAA Division I - Big East Conference) is the fellowship's primary team physician responsibility. Fellows serve in the role of team physician for all sports and have independent responsibilities for 9 major sports including men and women's soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball, tennis, track & field, golf and sailing. Fellows will have the opportunity to shadow experienced sports medicine physicians in Division I football as well as men and women's basketball. Opportunities also exist to cover Big East tournaments in various sports as the hosting University. Fellows also staff a training room clinic once a week.
 
Eckerd College Athletics
The secondary team physician responsibility for fellows occurs at Eckerd College (NCAA Division II - Sunshine State Conference). Here, fellows serve in the role of team physician for athletes with independent responsibilities in 11 major sports, providing sideline coverage and pre-participation physical. Athletes take advantage of the proximity of our sports medicine clinic to the college and establish their sports medicine and primary care needs with us.  Fellows also staff a training room clinic once a week.
 
Pinellas County High School Athletics
Under the direction of team physician Dr. George Canizares, Sports Medicine Fellows provide sideline coverage for various high schools during the football season and provide pre-participation physical exams to these athletes as well.
 
Florida Race Place Triathlon Series
As part of the mass event experience during the fellowship, Sports Medicine Fellows staff the medical tent for three sprint triathlons (0.25 mi swim, 10 mi bike, 5K run) during the triathlon season. Fellows learn to organize the medical team for the events and coordinate medical care with community medical resources.
 
Breast Cancer 3-Day, Benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure
In the fall of each fellowship year, fellows provide primary medical coverage for this national 3-day event and serve as assistant medical director. Fellows gain experience in the management of heat related illnesses as well as acute overuse musculoskeletal and dermatologic conditions of the lower extremity. Fellows provide supervision to approximately 40-50 ancillary medical staff including nurses, paramedics and physical therapists.
 
Professional Boxing/Mixed Martial Arts
Under the direction of ringside physician Dr. Carlos Rodriguez, Sports Medicine Fellows have to opportunity to sit ringside and provide medical coverage to combat athletes in the sport of boxing and mixed martial arts.
 
Tampa Bay Sports Community
With beautiful year-round weather and beaches, St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay attract many sporting events from around the country. Fellows have been invited by community physicians and athletic trainers to provide medical coverage to various events including Olympic-caliber triathlons, BMX racing, X-Games and the AVP tour.
