Dear Doctor,
Thank you for your interest in the Bayfront Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. Our one-year, fully accredited fellowship program takes place in the heart of the Tampa Bay area on the West Coast of Florida. We accept applications from residents completing primary care residency programs in family medicine, PM&R, pediatrics, and emergency medicine. Successful completion of the fellowship program prepares graduates to attain a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Sports Medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine.
Two of our core faculty members possess a CAQ in Sports Medicine and have extensive experience in the care of athletes at all levels of participation. Faculty have served as team physicians for the University of South Florida (NCAA Div I), Eckerd College (NCAA Div II), Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL), Tampa Bay Storm (AFL), and local high schools. Faculty are also well published in sports medicine literature, and are national speakers with interests in heat illness, exercise physiology, cardiovascular diseases, sudden death in athletes, and the pre-participation exam.
The fellowship experience includes six weeks of cadaver dissection to review basic anatomy, rotations with community sports medicine fellowship trained orthopedic surgeons, training room clinics for athletes at the University of South Florida and Eckerd College, exercise physiology research and education on a weekly basis at the University of South Florida, and bi-monthly radiology rounds. The primary clinical experience is held at the Center for Sports Medicine at Bayfront, which is staffed by the fellows three times a week. The clinics offer a multi-disciplinary approach to sports medicine with consultation from physical therapists, sports dietitians, radiologists, and orthopedic surgeons available. Procedures such as casting and splinting, joint injections, fracture management, and exercise stress testing with gas analysis are also offered.
Fellows will be given the opportunity to act independently as team physicians for various sports at the University of South Florida and Eckerd College, as well as local high schools. Opportunities also exist for fellows to shadow primary care team physicians for the National Hockey League (Tampa Bay Lightning) and Major League Baseball (Tampa Bay Rays). Our program also provides medical coverage for a number of sprint triathlons in the area organized by Florida Race Place Magazine Promotions.
At Bayfront, fellows function as junior faculty and have responsibilities for teaching family medicine residents in the clinical setting, as well as during noon conferences and didactics. Scholarly activity is also expected and fellows will have the opportunity to develop a longitudinal project over the course of their fellowship.
In summary, the Bayfront Sports Medicine Fellowship offers an exciting year with a broad range of experience, independent learning, dedicated faculty, and a collegial atmosphere. If you have any questions about the program, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to an opportunity to meet you as you develop your career in sports medicine.
Sincerely,
The Sports Medicine Fellowship Faculty
